History
Liberty County Water Control & Improvement District No. 1 was officially established by local voters in 1947, but our community’s drainage history began much earlier.
In the early 1900s, local farmers and ranchers used teams of horses and mules to dig channels across the land. These channels directed stormwater, helped reduce flooding, and provided water for agricultural irrigation.
Today, Liberty County Water Control & Improvement encompasses approximately 37,423 acres in southwestern Liberty County, Texas, and maintains approximately 83 miles of drainage channels. All District channels ultimately discharge into Cedar Bayou.
Although the equipment and methods have changed over the years, the District’s commitment remains the same: Managing Drainage, Protecting Property, and Serving Our Community.
